First thing, banding...Banding is easier when you work with clean hair that has not been sprayed with any type of detangler or shine product. It makes the hair slippery and then your hands are slippery and it is hard to hold the little bands as well as your combs and then of course your nose will itch...it always does when your hands get messy! Cutting...Band your mane, get all of your bands in a straight row down the back of the neck, take a comb through them and then cut evenly. REMEMBER to cut a small amount off at a time, you can take off more but you cannot put it back...practice makes perfect and the more times you band the better you will get at it. Try using contrasting colors once you get good at banding to draw attention to the bands, be sure and get good before you do this, you might not want to draw attention to those bands if you are still perfecting your technique... According to the APHA, it is not necessary to cut and band a mane BUT it does promote the idea that you were willing to go that extra mile to make your horse look good. The APHA as well as the AQHA states that the mane should lie upon the natural side. I made the mistake of listening to those who thought they knew and tried my darndest to get a mane to lay on the opposite side of her natural side and spent a great deal of time frustrated especially every time she shook...Now if you have a mane that decides it wants to lay partially to the right and partially to the left, pick a side and train that hair! With time and a lot of effort you can overcome that double parted mane.
The products listed below are products that we use in our everyday life as well as prepping for a show. There are products available no matter what your budget, and remember: a clean well groomed horse is just as presentable as a horse that has been shined, sprayed and glossed. If you feel you must have a little enhancement use a small (very small) amount of baby oil on a towel and wipe it all over your horse for a little extra shine. Be careful and do not apply to the saddle blanket, and girth area due to a possible tack slippage and you becoming the afternoons entertainment...
