Ground Training & Lessons

We feel that GROUND MANNERS are one of the most important aspects of your horse's training and probably the one aspect that is consistently overlooked...

We had the chance to sit and talk to a local trainer at a meeting of the Cape Fear Trail Riders by the name of Jerry King.  He's from right here in North Carolina and he passed on a couple of what he referred to as "Common Sense" items.

His first and most important shared item, Carrots!  He don't like them, won't eat them and will not feed them to your horse or any horse for that matter.  His point?  DO NOT HAND FEED YOUR HORSE!  If you have something to feed your horse as far as a treat goes, place it in his bowl or feed bucket.  Do not train that horse to look for and bite at your or any humans hands.  That could make a horse dangerous to be around and that is not the desired effect.

His second shared item, Training.  Usually it is the humans who need to be trained on how to operate and use a horse, not the other way around...You can take a well trained horse, place him with an individual not accustomed to horses and that horse will revert back to the bad mannered animal he once was with a total lack of respect for you and your space.  Of course that will change once a person who demands respect from that horse comes back into his life.  His point?  These are horses not lap dogs and they require different handling and different types of discipline.

The man makes great sense, again, we listen and use what works for us...

Another trainer we spend a great deal of time with is Alan Fisher of Alan Fisher Performance Horses, also here in North Carolina.  Alan's shared item?  People petting horses when they are working, or under tack.  When that horse is tacked up, it is working and not to be petted like a dog.  When that horse comes out of the gear, pet him.  Now don't get him wrong, he will praise the horse when he has completed a good job or maneuver but no lovey dovey stuff.

Again, this makes sense.  Most horse training is common sense and consistency.  We believe in being firm, consistent and using our brains when it comes to horses.  We are not world famous trainers but we do know what we expect from our horses and that is respect!  That comes from ground manners...the core of your horses training.

If you are looking for the basics, such as loading, water crossing and ground manners, we can help you.  If you need more?  Call a professional horse trainer with good references.

We also offer training sessions for you as well as your horse.  Learning to care for a horse in a healthy way is one of the most important lessons you can learn.  Others include loading, grooming,  tacking up, nutrition, basic WP show support and safe trail riding.

The best thing to remember, put your knowledge to use.  Don't take a class, spend time with instructors or trainers and not use your newfound knowledge.  It will not do you or your horse any good and will end up frustrating all involved...
