ISABELLA STAR FLY

June 2006, a soft brown eyed girl rested her huge bony head on my shoulder and there we stayed for over an hour.  I held her, I rubbed her, & I told her I WOULD make it all better…

My husband, James, and I were horse shopping for our son, AJ.  Being the  protective mother, I was along to let any horses purchased know that I would not tolerate any harm to my child.  As we walked down the row of horses for sale, we experienced ears being pinned, snapping sounds made by their teeth, others just moving out of your reach as you attempted to make contact.  I then noticed a dark colored horse in the back fence as I got closer to that creature the uglier it became.  Dull coat, protruding shoulder, withers, spine & hip bones, a big ugly head,  and a very skinny neck.  Not to mention the green stuff dripping out of its nostrils and running from its eyes.

I was afraid to touch this thing, and as I told my son to run back to the truck for the baby wipes and hand sanitizer, this thing reached its big ugly head over the fence and rested it upon my shoulder.  We were looking at each other, eye to eye, soft big brown green running eye to my blue one…She relaxed, the weight of her head heavy upon me, closing her eyes, she sighed.  I started to move away but something held me there just a moment longer than I was comfortable with.  My husband caught up to me asking if I was okay and I said, “Boy this is one ugly horse and its head is heavy!”  “I believe she is sick and I think she likes me!”  As I placed my hands upon her flesh, I felt her weight deepen upon my shoulder, I stroked the side of her big head, down her skinny neck & into her protruding chest bone.  I crooned to her as she struggled to breath, you could hear her breath wheezing and rattling with each intake of air.  I hugged her tightly and continued to caress her neck as James went into her gate to get a better look.  This poor thing had been starved, not to death, but way past the point of abuse, add the fact that she had green stuff leaking from her,  and consider she just arrived from a horse auction out of Georgia, she was pretty much traumatized, but she was resting her big head upon my shoulder. We were as one, this big thing and I.  She fell asleep and took herself nap.  About an hour later James brought her some hay and as she awakened she spotted the hay and left me to eat.  All it took was one look between us and we decided we would put money down on this girl just to get a vet check on her.

Doc came to visit, drew blood and as he went over her he was quite confident that he could cure her of the infection in her lungs and hoped that nothing else showed up in her labs.  He wrote us a script for some new type of antibiotics that were to be given twice daily and left to return with the results of the blood work at a later date.  To give 24 pills to a horse is an interesting chore.  I used maple syrup and poured this over a small amount of sweet feed.  It worked...

Her labs came back with no frightening results, she was showing signs of improvement, still had a right wicked cough but improving.  We decided we would take a chance and make her one of our family...

These are the results after 3 months with her new owner, AJ & Triple B Horses…

We would like you to know after she healed, and after she was physically fit James started to work with her.  We discovered that she was already broke to ride, very curious, and later we discovered that she is very intelligent.  This girl has turned out to be the best horse.  She is perfect for a child, a beginning rider, or those of us who are nervous about riding, even though we know how.   Miss Isabella Star Fly was an undiscovered jewel hidden beneath sickness and malnutrition.  Remember what they say,  “Looks can be deceiving!”

This is our Izzy 6 months after we brought her home and just before she turned three.  My son and his horse, what a pair.  Learning, loving & enjoying each others company.

Notice how nicely she has filled out and her neck is the size it should be.  She is building muscle and stamina.  Her coughing has completely subsided and we have started to work her longer and longer with each session.

Look at her today at 4 years old and growing more beautiful with each passing hour.  I do not know what would have happened to her had we not noticed her and took action, or better yet, had she not noticed us and took action since she is the one who made the initial move by placing her head upon my shoulder, what a smart girl, our Isabella...

She will always be my toddler girl, and my son's first horse...

Jan 2008 and FUZZY!  You would think she is after grass, NO!  A stick...she plays just like a dog plays fetch except she does not bring it back to you...

Springtime 2008 and her first horse show as a visitor, she is way to curious to be a participant, yet...

Izzy 2011...Izzy needs a family that will ride her.  She is a great beginners horse and is for sale, we are downsizing due to the economy.  Please come for a visit with Izzy, take her for a spin, she is a really great girl!
